Beavers Get Close Win Over Royals, 2-1
|
The Portland Beavers got a marvelous performance from pitcher Jose Mendoza. The right-hander kept the Guelph offense from ever getting much traction. The result was an impressive 2-1 Portland victory at Snapper Stadium. The win was credited to Pete Foster in relief. His record improves to 2-1. Don Drew took the loss. Tony González was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 7 of 7 save opportunities.
With scoring opportunities rare, the Beavers had to cash in when they had the chance. One such opportunity presented itself in the bottom of the fourth, when left fielder Matt Wilhelm hit a run-scoring single. The single came off Salvador Medina and made the score 1-0, Beavers. Wilhelm was 1 for 3.
"Some games build character," said Portland manager Jeff Pascarella. "Like this one."
The second-place Royals now sit at 54-38.
