Hit Streak Over, Pirates Stop Lagasse Monday, August 29th , 2039 Late in the game, all eyes in Busch Stadium were on Jim Lagasse as he stepped into the batter box. His 24-game hitting streak was on the line, and he had a zero in the hit column on the day. Sadly for Lagasse, it was not meant to be -- the zero would stay and the streak would end. If there was a silver lining for Lagasse today, it was that his St. Louis Cardinals won the game anyway, stopping the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 7-5. "Winning took some of the disappointment out of it," Lagasse told reporters in the clubhouse. "Looking back on it, it was a great experience. Not too many players can say they had a hit in 24 straight games. It's something I will always remember." So far this year Lagasse is batting .280 with no home runs, 49 RBIs and 56 runs scored. |
