Rays, Diamondbacks Play 21 to Settle Game 1, Tampa Bay Now Leads Series 1-0
|
As the Tampa Bay Rays and Arizona Diamondbacks battled through extra innings, it was a rookie who made the difference.
Young Tampa Bay left fielder Isaias Fernandez, 22 led the way with a strong hitting performance in the 21-inning marathon. Fernandez went 2 for 4 with a home run and a walk, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3 during the 10-9 Tampa Bay win over the Diamondbacks. The win gives the Rays a 1-0 lead in the best-of-5 Division Series.
Tampa Bay third baseman Wander Franco provided the clutch hit. In the top of the 21st, he belted a solo home run to put his team in front and help them pick up the win.
"I just tried to make good contact," said Franco.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Chase Field in Phoenix.
