Blues Get One-Run Win at China Grove
|
The Memphis Blues did just enough to secure a victory over the China Grove Samurai, 2-1, at Thunderdome. Nobody did more than pitcher Cal Bates. The winning pitcher was Bates, now 9-8. He tossed 5.2 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 1 and fanning 5. Picking up the save was Sheridon Raffles, his 12th.
Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for Héctor Castro? The Memphis second baseman had a run-scoring single in the top of the sixth inning to put the Blues on top, 2-1. For the game, Castro had 1 double and 2 singles in 4 at-bats.
"Winning makes the heart grow fonder -- for more winning," said Castro, cracking a smile.
The victory gives Memphis a record of 81-71.
