The China Grove Samurai faced a tough opponent in New York pitcher Johnny Johnson, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Thunderdome by a final score of 3-2. Johnson went 5.1 innings and allowed 1 run. The winner was Ed Fish in relief. His record improves to 5-8. José Rodríguez took the loss. The victory puts China Grove at 35-59.

Aurelio Cruz was the walk-off hero for China Grove. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Samurai left fielder hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.

"We had the right guys up at the right times," said New York manager Jack Albright. "We just didn't cash in."
