The China Grove Samurai took Mahoning Valley pitcher Cliff Offredi's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Thunderdome. The final score had China Grove getting past the Scrappers, 2-1. Offredi went 6.1 innings and allowed 2 runs, striking out 4. The 6th-place Samurai are now 33-47, the Scrappers 41-41.
Had Frank Poncherello not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Poncherello hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 2-1, in favor of the Samurai.
Afterward, Samurai manager Bobby Hillier was ebullient. "That was a fun game to coach," he told a group of reporters, adding, "I hope it was just as fun to watch."
