J.P. Lovins of the Washington Bats was on top of his game.

The 28-year-old tantalized the Denver Bulls with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 5-0.

"He had the changeup working," Denver manager Ed Gainer said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Washington hurler had 4 strikeouts, gave up 1 walk and surrendered 2 hits in his complete-game effort.

Lovins told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

This year, Lovins has a 6-7 mark in 16 starts with a 4.57 ERA. He has given up 101 hits in 102.1 innings, struck out 62 and issued 27 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .266 batting average against him.
