Melancon Gets Award for Relief Work
Thursday, October 8th , 2009
When Mark Melancon jogged in from the bullpen this season, opposing teams knew they were going to have a tough time putting up runs.

The
Portland Sea Dogs reliever turned in a dominant campaign and has been named the Eastern League Reliever of the Year Award winner for 2009.

His award-winning season saw the bullpen ace get 35 saves in 52 relief appearances, 57 strikeouts in 55.2 innings and only 12 walks. He had a record of 4 wins and 3 losses to go with his 1.46 ERA.

"I hope I can pitch like this every year," he said.

He received 9 first place votes out of a possible 10. Mike Penn of the Altoona Curve finished second in voting with 1 first place vote, while Vinnie Pestano of the Trenton Thunder finished third.
