Spiders Drop Mets, 4-2, with Late Score
|
The New York Mets could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Francisco Cordoba into a win. Instead, the Cleveland Spiders prevailed, 4-2. Cordoba threw 6.1 innings of 2-hit ball. Jorge Vasquez recorded the save for Cleveland, his 9th of the season. The third-place Mets dropped to 22-19.
Jim Thome provided a timely hit. The Cleveland first baseman delivered a run-scoring triple in the top of the ninth inning to put the Spiders on top, 3-2. It was his only hit in the game, but he made it count.
"Good pitching, clutch hitting," said Cleveland skipper Larry Rothschild. "I can't complain."
