The Oakland Athletics rode a solid performance from 35-year-old starting pitcher Javier Vazquez to a win, beating the Seattle Mariners, 4-2, at Oakland Coliseum. In 8 innings, Vazquez surrendered 9 hits, while striking out 6 and walking 0. He allowed 2 runs. Heath Bell nailed down his 3rd save.
Chris Snelling, who finished 3rd in the AL in on-base percentage with .384 last year, had a timely hit in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two out and runners on 2nd and 3rd, the Oakland first baseman hit a 2-run single. That put the Athletics in front, 4-2.
"Obviously, you want to go out there and be good every time out," said Vazquez. "I take the ball every day with the same mindset."
With the win, Oakland goes to 13-9.
