Tigers Lose Despite Valiant Effort by Encarnacion
The Detroit Tigers got a sterling performance from second baseman Edwin Encarnacion, but the Texas Rangers still prevailed, 10-5. Encarnacion was 2 for 3 with 2 home runs and a walk. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice. The winner was Texas reliever Chris Young, now 1-0. The loser was Eddie Priest. Now 3-8, the Tigers have gotten off to a poor start.

Texas used a well-timed hit by Vinny Castilla to capture the win. The shortstop socked a 2-run double in the top of the second inning to put the Rangers ahead, 2-0. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important.

"The boys came out and just played their butts off," said Texas manager Bobby Liford.
