Clutch Hitting Delivers Win for Cardinals
|
Atlanta got a big-time effort from pitcher Clayton Kershaw, but it wasn't enough to keep the St. Louis Cardinals from winning the game, 6-4. Kershaw threw 7.1 innings of 2-hit ball for the losing team. R A Dickey, the winning pitcher, improved to 7-6. He pitched 7.1 innings, giving up 8 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 4 and walking 1. At 54-44, the Cardinals are currently first in the NL Central Division.
St. Louis got the win thanks to a clutch hit from Delmon Young. The right fielder stroked a bases-clearing double in the top of the eighth inning to put the Cardinals ahead, 6-2. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it had a major impact on the outcome.
"Credit where credit is due," said Young, "this was a team win."
