Win Lifts Mariners to 44-42
|
Pitching was the name of the game in a tight contest between the Seattle Mariners and the Oakland Athletics. Seattle won it, 2-1. Seattle starter Eduardo Ortiz was in command. Ortiz went 6 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. His record improves to 7-4. Jose Valverde got credit for the save for Seattle. It was his 16th of the year.
In the top of the fifth, Seattle catcher Mike Sweeney had a productive at-bat. With runners on 1st and 2nd and two out, Sweeney stroked a run-scoring single to right-center. It made the score 1-0, Seattle. For the game, he went 2-4 with 2 singles.
"I tell our guys all the time, 'Every pitch is the right pitch if you put it in the right place, you believe in it and have conviction,'" Seattle manager Jeff Griggs said.
The victory gives Seattle a record of 44-42.
