Washington Beats Philadelphia in Extra Innings
|
In a high-scoring contest between Washington and Philadelphia, designated hitter Nick Markakis was a difference-maker. Markakis, who is tied for 8th in the NL with a .537 slugging percentage, distinguished himself in the 12-8 Washington win. He went 3 for 6 with a home run and 2 doubles, while scoring 2 times and driving in 8. The winner was Frank Herrmann in relief. His record improves to 3-1. Curtis Shaw took the loss. Erick Ojeda was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 24 of 28 save opportunities.
Markakis had a game-changing double in the top of the tenth. On a 1-1 fastball from Justin James, he banged a bases-clearing double to right, giving the Wizards a 11-8 lead. It was the 35th double of the year for Markakis.
"Exciting game to play in," said Markakis. "Getting the win makes it even better."
The first-place Wizards improved to 53-30.
