Hughes Big Deal in Theall: Hits for Cycle
Monday, August 22nd , 2022
Mark Hughes did everything he could for the Theall Cubs -- literally.
The 23-year-old center fielder hit a single, a double, a triple and a home run for the Cubs, going for the cycle and helping them get past the Des Moines Centaurs, 9-4, at Des Moines Stadium.
"Yeah, I was some kind of hitter in this game," Hughes reflected later. "It was like all I had to do was close my eyes and swing the bat."
In a game headed for the record books, Hughes banged out 4 hits in 5 at-bats and totaled 1 RBI and 3 runs scored. Speaking with the press about the feat, he attributed it to "a lot of luck."
"A triple is so hard to hit," he said. "To just decide to get one in a game when you need it for a cycle, it's impossible. Usually something weird has to happen, the ball kicking past an outfielder or somebody falling down. There's a ton of luck in hitting for a cycle."
Mark Hughes singled in the 1st, tripled in the 2nd, doubled in the 4th, hit a solo-shot off David Williams in the 6th and struck out in the 8th.
This year, Hughes has socked 67 hits in 279 at-bats for a .240 average with 4 home runs. He is getting on base at a .345 pace and his totals also include 32 RBIs and 37 runs scored.
