Giants Drop Mets, 3-2
|
The San Francisco Giants got a strong performance from pitcher Pedro Martinez, who stymied the New York offense en route to a win, 3-2, at Candlestick Park. The winner in relief was Trevor Hoffman. He is now 1-2. The right-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 1.1 innings. The Giants lead the NL West Division by 9 games.
San Francisco won the game in the bottom of the tenth inning. With one out and Blaine Neal on the mound for New York, center fielder Sammy Sosa hit a dramatic solo home run, bringing Giants fans to their feet.
"It takes a lot of things to win a ballgame," said San Francisco manager Scott Doyley. "It's usually not just one thing."
