Big Day for McVerry: Swats 5 Hits Sunday, July 31st , 2039 The Birmingham Barons stopped the Mississippi Braves by a score of 12-2 at Trustmark Park today, with the lion's share of the credit going to right fielder Doug McVerry. The 20-year-old had a career day, collecting 5 hits. "Every batter wants to have a quality at-bat every time he steps up to the plate," McVerry said later. "He wants to hit the ball hard." McVerry did just that in his 6 at-bats, much to the chagrin of the Braves. "Not much that I can say," offered Mississippi manager Pedro Diaz. "He just hammered the heck out of us." Doug McVerry hit a solo-shot off Dan Hoffman in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 6th, singled in the 8th and grounded out in the 9th. In his stats this season, McVerry has posted a batting average of .326 with 135 hits in 414 at-bats, 8 home runs and 44 RBIs. He has also scored 63 runs, walked 19 times and compiled a .365 OBP.
