Cubs Beat Express, 5-3
|
Though he had a terrific game, Vinny Cuervo could not prevent his team, the Round Rock Express, from absorbing a loss. Iowa won the game, 5-3. Cuervo went 3-4 with a home run and a double. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. Dan Rickles, who went 7.2 innings, was the winning pitcher. He was charged with 3 runs on 9 hits, while walking 1 and striking out 7. His record now stands at 10-3. The win gives Iowa a season record of 52-37.
There were several reasons the Cubs beat the Express, but one factor was Frank Daoust. In the bottom of the second, the Iowa designated hitter came to bat and hit a run-scoring single. It staked his team to a 1-0 lead.
"We'll put this win in the can," said Daoust, "and go after the next one."
