Clutch Hitting Delivers Win for Nationals
|
San Diego got a valiant performance from pitcher Mike Sutton, but it wasn't enough to beat the Washington Nationals. Washington won the game, 3-2. Sutton threw 7.2 innings of 4-hit ball for the losing team. Washington reliever Bobby Pudney was the winner. His record is now 9-5. The losing pitcher was Chris Asher. The Nationals now own a record of 47-75.
The game was decided with one out in the bottom of the ninth. With Washington trailing 2-1, Ralph Plante hit a fastball from Chris Asher to right for a 2-run double. Just like that, the Nationals had a walk-off win.
"Every loss hurts," said San Diego manager Jonas Dufek. "But this was a tough one."
