Braves Dump Cubs, 5-4
|
The Atlanta Braves overcame a good performance by Chicago right fielder Dan Staten to knock off Chicago, 5-4, at Wrigley Field. Staten was 2-3 with a home run and a walk, while scoring 2. Steve Epperson, 5-4, earned the win in relief. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 1.2 innings. Mubale Kwasi earned the save for Atlanta, his 1st of the year.
The Braves got a big boost from designated hitter Dave Long who had a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning off Cubs hurler Brandon Bellamy. It was his 37th RBI of the season and put Atlanta on top, 5-4.
"We cashed in when we had the chance," said Atlanta manager Trent Reichard.
Atlanta, at 54-60, occupies second place in the National League East Division.
