Szumski, St. Louis Open Wild Card Round with Win
The St. Louis Cardinals got past the Los Angeles Dodgers by the score of 16-7 today in the crucial first game of the Wild Card Round at Busch Stadium. St. Louis shortstop Steve Szumski went 3-4 with 3 singles and a walk, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3, to lead the charge. With a 1-0 lead, the Cardinals will have two chances to close out the Dodgers.

Terry Smith helped the St. Louis cause in the bottom of the first. With a runner on 1st and St. Louis trailing 1-0, he put the hurt on a fastball from Bobby Buggs, launching it over the fence for a 2-run homer. The blast put the Cardinals in front, 2-1.

"Right after I hit Number 2, I sent a message to (Cardinals owner) Jared Elder and said 'Remember this at contract time!'," Smith told reporters after the game.

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
