New York Mets starter J.J. McNamee turned in an exceptional performance against the St. Louis Cardinals at Citi Field, resulting in a New York win, 3-1. The winning pitcher was McNamee, now 9-1. He tossed 5 innings of 3-hit ball, while walking 0 and fanning 9. Nader Lugono, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 1st save.

Juan Rey had a big 2-run home run for the Mets in the bottom of the fifth inning. With New York leading 1-0 and a runner on 1st, he got a changeup from Ernesto Velasquez and swatted a home run to left-center. It was his 3rd home run of the season, and more importantly, it put the Mets ahead, 3-0.

"Whenever we hold the other team to one run," said Mets manager Hunter Smith, "I like our chances."

The first-place Mets improved to 43-25.
