The St. Louis Cardinals picked up a win at PNC Park, knocking off the Pittsburgh Pirates, 8-2. Starting pitcher Ernesto Velasquez was a big reason why. Velasquez got the win, improving to 5-0. He allowed 7 hits and walked 1 over 6.2 innings. Velasquez allowed 2 runs. Case Williams recorded his 2nd save for St. Louis.

The Cardinals got an important contribution from left fielder Angelo Lara, who in the top of the first hit a 2-1 knuckle curve into right for a 2-run double. It was his 15th double of the season and put the Cardinals ahead, 4-0.

"Everything felt in sync," said Velasquez.

The Cardinals raised their record to 27-17.
