In a low-scoring contest between the Oakland Athletics and the New York Yankees, Lance McCullers Jr., who finished 2nd in the AL in ERA with 3.16 in 2021, proved to be the difference. The Oakland right-hander earned props for his performance in the 2-1 Athletics win. The winner was McCullers Jr.. He threw 8.0 innings of shutout ball. The loser was Gerrit Cole.

Oakland used the hitting of Colby Thomas to pick up the win. The left fielder clubbed a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to put the Athletics on top, 2-0. For the game, Thomas had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
