Losing Streak Continues for Reds with 6-4 Loss to Cubs
|
Though he had a stellar game, Juan Esparza could not prevent his team, the Cincinnati Reds, from losing, 6-4, to the Chicago Cubs. Esparza was 3-3 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Joe Rios, the winning pitcher, improved to 4-8. He pitched 5 innings, giving up 4 hits and 1 run, while striking out 4 and walking 4. The save went to William Salazar, his 5th this season.
The Cubs got a big at-bat from right fielder Mike Van Winkle. For the game, Van Winkle was 1 for 3 with a home run. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. In the bottom of the fifth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a 3-run home run. His 29th home run of the season gave Chicago a 4-1 lead.
"This game is going to humble you at times and you've got to man up and deal with it," said Cincinnati manager Ramon Santiago.
Cincinnati has now lost 8 in a row.
