Blue Jays Top Spiders 9-7 to Begin MLFWCS
|
Cleveland left fielder Kelley Hayford pounded Toronto Blue Jays pitchers at Progressive Field, but it was not enough to keep the Spiders from falling, 9-7 in Game 1 of the Wild Card Showdown. Hayford hit 2 home runs, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice, though he couldn't keep the Spiders from slipping to a 1-0 deficit in the best-of-5 series.
It could have been a different outcome for Toronto, had it not been for Isiah Mederos, the 26-year old second baseman . Mederos contributed a 2-run single in the top of the fifth inning to put Toronto up, 6-3.
"It's true for every sport, I think, but the playoffs are so short that you've just got to get in and get hot," Toronto manager Fraser Stewart told BNN after the win. "We took care of the first part and now we're just working on the second."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Progressive Field in Cleveland.
