Detroit shortstop Glenn Wright played a vital role in his team's 5-4 conquest of Los Angeles. He went 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2 for Detroit. Detroit pitcher Travis Phelps earned the win, hiking his record to 7-0. B.J. Ryan suffered the loss. With the win over Los Angeles, the Tigers improved to 58-25.
Bobby Bonilla played the role of hero for Detroit. In the bottom of the ninth, he launched a 3-run home run off B.J. Ryan to win the game. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was the decisive blow.
"We couldn't have scripted it any better," Wright said in his postgame press conference.
