Timbers Triumph in 1980 Round 1

The Wausau Timbers ignited a huge celebration as they beat the Burlington Bees 4-3 to win the Round 1.

Wausau won the series 4-1, capturing the title for the 1st time.

"We stepped it up at the right time, and now we're the champs," said Wausau manager Jeff Johannes. "It's a great feeling."

The champs finished the regular season 120-20 and claimed first place in the Midwest League North.

In the jubilant clubhouse after the decisive game, series MVP and third baseman Alan Bannister said the Timbers have "great fans and they deserve this."

"I am so happy for our city right now," he said.
