Great Stroke: Christopherson Gets 5 Hits
Thursday, June 28th , 1990
5 hits in a game has always been a big milestone in baseball -- 5 hits in a game gets a player's name in the record book, win or lose. Gary Christopherson got his name recorded today, but the Waterloo Diamonds picked up the win at Waterloo Municipal Stadium, topping the Cedar Rapids Reds, 13-12.

"He bushwhacked us," said winning manager Carter Musselwhite. "We were lucky to come out ahead."

Christopherson spoke to reporters in the clubhouse following the game, saying his nerves only set in once he was on the cusp of the milestone.

"I got too much adrenaline going when I realized that this could be a once-in-a-lifetime day," the third baseman said. "I think the coaches could tell I was going to be ready to swing at anything close. That's why my third base coach told me to calm down and wait for a good pitch. That got me back on track."

Gary Christopherson singled in the 2nd, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, walked in the 5th, singled in the 6th, singled in the 8th and hit an RBI single in the 9th.

To date Christopherson has chalked up a .254 average with 2 home runs, driven in 31 runs and scored 38 times.
