Seattle wasted a solid 7-inning effort from starting pitcher Basil Fioretti, losing to San Diego, 2-1, at T-Mobile Park. Now 13-19, the Pilots have gotten off to a poor start.

The Pilots had been locked in a 0-0 tie with the Padres going into the top of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 21-year old first baseman Mark McGwire came to the plate. McGwire hit a run-scoring double on a first pitch sinker from Seattle hurler Basil Fioretti. It was McGwire's 4th double of the year.

McGwire called the win a testament to his team's "grit."
