Kansas City Royals starter Randy Tate was locked-in. He led his team to a win over the Seattle Mariners, 3-1. Robert Sekel picked up the win in relief for Kansas City, while Jeff Reardon took the loss. The 4th-place Royals raised their record to 78-81.

Kansas City won the game in the bottom of the 11th inning. With one out and Jeff Reardon on the mound for Seattle, third baseman George Brett hit a dramatic 2-run home run, bringing Royals fans to their feet.

"We got what we needed when we needed to," said Kansas City manager Sam Jones.
