Thursday, October 8th , 2009
He may have less experience than most of his South Atlantic League peers, but that didn't slow Welington Castillo down at all in 2009.

At the age of 22, the Kannapolis catcher has been named the winner of the South Atlantic League Most Valuable Player Award.

He had a .311 batting average and a .402 on-base percentage this year. In 105 games he piled up 123 hits, 14 doubles, 5 triples, 29 home runs, 88 RBIs and 70 runs scored.

"I'm blown away by the season I was able to put together," he said. "I'm looking forward to trying to do it all again next year."

He received 14 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Yunesky Sanchez of the Kannapolis Intimidators finished second in voting, while Kyle Morgan of the Delmarva Shorebirds finished third.
