A celebratory mood filled the air as the GCL Pirates closed out the season with a 3-2 victory over the GCL Astros at Pirate City to capture the Round 2, 4-3.

Giving the Astros credit for a hard-fought series, Pirates players said they believed throughout the postseason that their "destiny" was to be crowned Gulf Coast League champions.

"We felt like this was our year all season long," said center fielder Engel Beltre, who was named series MVP. "It was our destiny to win it and we did."

It was the 2nd in franchise history. During the Gulf Coast League Central regular season GCL put up a 42-18 record and finished first.

"They're the champions and they deserve it," said a dejected GCL manager Joe Dewese. "We played good ball, they just played better than us."
